noun
1. the region of the atmosphere outside the troposphere but below the mesosphere and ionosphere, at an altitude of about 20 to 50 km above the earth, characterised by relatively uniform temperature over considerable differences in altitude or by a markedly different lapse rate from that of the troposphere below.
2. Obsolete all of the earth's atmosphere lying outside the troposphere.
